Science You Can Do At Home!

Class Description: In this course, you'll get to learn science using materials that are around you every day! We'll learn about how the food you eat gets its color, how to make sure your money is clean, what balloons are made of, and even what the center of the Earth looks like. The course uses common household materials, and ingredients you can buy at the grocery store. Each class, we'll perform a different at home science experiment, and investigate what's going on that can make that happen. Each experiment also has science of many different levels, so anyone can learn from these classes!
Facilitator Bio:My name is Jeff Lampert, and I'm a high school Chemistry and physics teacher in San Diego. I've always loved science, whether it was exploring the nature at camp as a kid, or working in the lab in college. My favorite part of science is getting to interact with different materials and investigations, and learn hands on how our world works.
Materials: Many of the materials needed you may already have at home, however if bought individually the cost will not exceed $16.

A Super Basic Introduction to ASL!

Class Description: This class will be a really fun and basic introduction to the wonderful language of American Sign Language (ASL)! We will be teaching students to introduce themselves, how to have simple conversations, and more fun ASL basics. This class is open to any skill level, it will be focused on introducing students to the language and serve as a starting point for learning, no previous ASL experience is necessary! Join us for a really fun and rewarding class, and gain a new and super impressive skill! :)
Facilitator Bio: Mallory: Hi! My name is Mallory and I am a senior in college! I have been taking ASL classes since middle school and I think it is such a beautiful and powerful language that I am so excited to share with everyone! Like EJ, I share a passion for equal access to education for everyone, and I believe learning ASL and engaging with the Deaf Community is a really important way to start! This class is going to be incredible! EJ: hi i'm EJ! I'm 17 and a senior in high school. I have a passion for activism and helping others. I am an ASL 3 student, the last year before interpreting. I am the president of the ASL club at my school. I want to major in ASL and spread awareness for the Deaf Community and shed light to the importance of equal access to communication!

Facilitator Bio: I am a graduating senior from Cal State Long Beach pursuing my degree in environmental science. I love to draw in my free times and explore different mediums of art. I also used to lead crafts at the Jewish Community Center where I utilized reusable material to teach the kids about sustainability

Mental Fitness: How to grow mental muscles in challenging times
Led by: Colby Mc Elrath - He/Him
Class Description: 2020 has proven to be one of the most challenging years in most of our lifetimes. In this course, we will learn about the science behind mindset, success, and happiness. We are going to learn skills that help us “work out” our brain the same way we work out our bodies. We will take a deep dive into how to approach challenges as gifts and opportunities while learning more about ourselves and more about the people around us. This course will be a fun, engaging, and practical way to gain skills and grow our mental muscles. Learn how to interact with your parents, teachers, and peers in ways that promote ease and flow.
Facilitator Bio: Colby Mc Elrath is a Mental Fitness coach who currently lives in Oceanside, CA. Colby has a diverse professional background in youth camping and outdoor education, leadership development and coaching, mental fitness coaching, and has also had lots of crazy side hustles including a dog walking business and working at a zoo! Colby got his start in the camp world at Pilgrim Pines over a decade ago and attributes much of his professional success to the impact the Pilgrim Pines (and greater UCC) family has had on his life. Colby is a zoologist, and an adventurer and wanderer at heart. He has backpacked and explored the jungles and rainforests of Central America researching tree frogs, the mountains of the Rockies studying grizzly bears, and the inter-coastal waters of British Columbia educating tourists about ecosystems.

Creative Writing for Wild Hearts
Led by: Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland - She/Her
Class Description: The poet Mary Oliver writes, “Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” In this class, stretch your imagination and flex your creative muscles as Pastor Jen guides you through a variety of creativity writing exercises. We will play with both fiction and poetry as we pay attention to our experiences and thoughts, revel in astonishment, and practice telling about it.
Facilitator Bio: Pastor Jen holds a BA in Creative Writing, an MFA in Creative Writing, and an MA in English Literature. She loves leading Creative Writing workshops and encouraging others to let their pens (or keyboards) run wild and free as a means of self-expression and self-exploration.

Class Description: Get your heart pumping with a fun Zumba workout! We will be dancing to easy-to-follow steps that will be sure to break a sweat while putting a smile on your face. This class is perfect for anyone who likes to move, so dance beginners will be right at home! Each class will feel like a party! Hope you can join!
Facilitator Bio: Dance has been a passion of mine for my whole life. I believe it can lead to an increase in confidence and body awareness. Zumba dance is a great place to start because it doesn't require a background in dance, just a desire to get moving and have a good time!

The White Lotus

Class Description: Do you like binge watching Netflix with your friends? Want to better your life by watching nichelodeon cartoons? Want to learn to fight racism, sexism, capitalism, and imperialism? Join The White Lotus! A weekly group discussing Avatar: The Last Airbender and the lessons to be learned from Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, and Iron. Plus Momo and Appa of course! No need to have watched Avatar, we'll be watching the episodes during our weekly sessions!
Facilitator Bio: I am an avid Avatar:The Last Airbender fan. I really enjoy watching it because it's fun and silly, but also for the deeper meaning. What can a kids show teach me about how to be anti-racist? I watch the show about once a year and always get something new from it. I'm really excited to see how the show can create a community within the camp community!
